SATOSHI SOMEYA, KOJI OKAMOTO, MASAO IIDA, School of Frontier Science, The University of Tokyo -- Phosphorescence and fluorescence are often applied to measure the temperature and the concentration of oxygen. The intensity and the lifetime of phosphor depend on the temperature and the oxygen concentration, due to the quenching effect of the phosphor. The present study clarified the effects of temperature on the lifetime of phosphorescence of Porphyrins, Ru bpy ; 2 + and the europium complex. The phosphorescence lifetime of oil solution water solution painted wall were measured with changing 3 temperature and oxygen concentration. In addition, the optical property of the small particles incorporated with the europium complex was investigated in the oil water. The lifetime was strongly affected by temperature. Then, the temperature sensitive particle TSParticle ; with metal complex was applied to measure temperature in Silicone oil 10cSt ; two-dimensionally. Present study is the result of ?High speed three-dimensional direct measurement technology development for the evaluation of heat flux and flow of liquid metal? entrusted to the University of Tokyo by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan MEXT.

Pertussis `whooping cough' ; is a highly contagious disease of the respiratory tract caused by members of the Bordetella genus. In the Netherlands, 95% of pertussis cases are caused by Bordetella pertussis, while 5% are caused by Bordetella parapertussis. Pertussis was a major cause of child mortality before the introduction of vaccination. Pertussis is preceded by an incubation period of 6 to days.1 The disease is characterised by a catarrhal phase followed by a phase with paroxysmal coughs, which lasts for at least two weeks.2 The paroxysmal coughs can be accompanied by cyanosis, apnoea and fever. The most prevalent complications of pertussis are secondary infections, such as otitis media or pneumonia, and encephalopathy and seizures. Particularly among young unvaccinated infants, pertussis can cause severe symptoms and complications. In vaccinated older ; children and adults, the disease most often occurs with milder and or unrecognised symptoms.3 Transmission of the infection is by aerosol droplets, which is most efficient when there is close less than 5 feet ; contact. Cases are infectious from six days after exposure to three weeks after the onset of typical paroxysms, and are most infectious during the early catarrhal phase.

The capital is also pouring into metals and metal products, as well as machinery and apparatus sectors mainly household appliances ; . In 2004 first of them recorded investments of USD 468.5 million, which constituted 14% share in the total inflow. Inflow of foreign capital to the sector of household appliances was es ti mated at the level of USD 450.6 million, which constituted 6% of the total FDI inflow in 2004 and 14% of the inflow to the manufacturing sector. The capital is mostly originating from re-invested capital. The second most attractive sector for foreign investors is widely understood financial intermediation. In 2004 in vestors allocated USD 2.1 billion in this sector, which con sti tuted 27% of the FDI inflow to Poland. Foreign direct investments were also flowing to the real estate sector and the value of investments in this sector is estimated at the level of USD 865.5 million, which marks an increase of 10 percentage points in comparison to a year before. The inflow of foreign investment to Poland according to the sectors of Polish Classification of Activities PKD ; in the year 2004 is presented in Table 4. In terms of accumulated values of foreign direct in vestments with regard to the sector structure, it is similar to the structure observed in previous years. | Hormones are substances that occur naturally in the body and control the growth and activity of normal cells. The female hormones, oestrogen and progesterone, can also affect the growth of breast cancer cells. Hormone therapy for breast cancer consists of anti-hormone treatments to prevent female hormones working on breast cancer cells. Tamoxifen is one of the most common hormone therapies. In simple terms, it works by preventing oestrogen from attaching on to breast cancer cells and encouraging them to grow. Tamoxifen is taken as a daily tablet and usually causes few side effects. Your doctor should explain these to you prior to starting Tamoxifen. ; Artificial forms of progesterone the commonest ones are Provera and Megace ; can be used if Tamoxifen is not working effectively. A new drug called Anastrozole Arimidex ; has been developed and is being used for post-menopausal women instead of Tamoxifen or Megace. For pre-menopausal women, removing the ovaries which reduces the level of oestrogen in the body ; can be an effective method of treatment. The ovaries are removed by a minor operation, or stopped from working by giving a low dose of radiotherapy to the area. Unfortunately, removing the ovaries does bring on an early menopause which can be distressing, especially for a woman hoping to have children. It also causes typical menopausal side effects like hot flushes, dry skin, anxiety and depression. However, these symptoms can be effectively treated. M122 MEASUREMENT OF SERUM GLYCOPROTEINS FUCOSYLAT1ON INDEX; MARKER OF ACUTE HEPATITIS IN ALCOHOLIC DISEASE? Nathalie Seta, Maryvonne Cuer, Dominique Dalicy, Francine Hochedez, marielle Caradec, Genevieve Durand Laboratoire dc Biochimie A, Hdpital Bichat 46, rue H. Huchard, 75877 Paris cedex 18, France Specific markers for alcohol abuse are now well-defined, such as carbohydrate-deficient transferrin reflecting terminal glycosylation modifications of hepatic secreted serum grycoproteins. In the same way, numerous tools to diagnose or follow severe liver diseases associated with alcohol abuse have been developed. To see if fucosylated glyooproteins could be a useful tool for the diagnosis of acute alcoholic hepatitis AAH ; , we study a specific glycosylation step, the a I-6 fucosylation on the first N-acetylglucosamuryl residue of the glycan core of serum glycoproteins al-anlitrypsin AAT ; and a-fetoprotein AFP ; , in benign chronic liver diseases associated with alcohol abuse. We measure the fucosylation index FT ; of AAT and of AFP if elevated ; using a in presence of Lens cvlinaris agglulinin, in serum of patients at different stages of liver disease, compared with patients with systematic inflammation and healthy subjects Preliminary results of Lens culmarls agglutinin reactivity show that AAT is hyperfucosyiated in patients with AAH, compared to the other groups of patients studied, in opposition to AFP fucosylation status. Taken together, our first results should lead us to propose to the physicians a biological marker among the fucosylated serum glycoproteins, to help to detect AAH in alcoholic subjects and meperidine
While the contribution that team working makes to overall organisational effectiveness has been widely established in the literature, little research has been conducted on MDTs in the Irish Mental Healthcare Sector. Neither has there been a significant amount of international research on this topic that combines both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Our study combines both approaches, which will facilitate depth, generalisability and flexibility in the research enterprise. Our study adopts a pluralist strategy, the first stage of which includes a multi-site case study of designated teams. The findings from the first stage will feed into the second stage, which involves the design of a national survey, and will be augmented by secondary data and document analysis. In short, the research programme will comprise five main phases: Phase 1: Phase 2: Phase 3: Phase 4: Phase 5: Literature Review, document analysis and consultation Multi-site case study Quantitative national study Triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data Reporting and dissemination!

Anyone who has attended FA family meetings in recent years knows Lynn Welfare. She is a woman with boundless energy, affection and a hug for everyone; she is a positive, concerned presence as she cheerfully greets families and children. As we learned at a talent show, Lynn sings, writes music, and plays the piano beautifully. She is a 44-year-old FA patient who has done remarkably well for many years. She is determined to inform as many as she can about this disorder, and is willing to be a "guinea pig" for new therapies, hoping that children and young adults will benefit from her experiences. In April 1997, Lynn noticed a small sore on her tongue, about the size of half a thumbnail. Her physician believed that the irritation was caused by a tooth. It was treated topically to heal a possible infection. The sore did not go away and instead grew progressively larger. Six months later Lynn consulted her dentist. The dentist directed her to an oral surgeon, who stated he "didn't like the look or the feel of it." She was sent at once to an ear, nose and throat specialist who biopsied the area. A week later Lynn learned that she had a squamous cell carcinoma the size of a thumbnail on her tongue. Two weeks later another suspicious area on her tongue, close to the malignancy, was noted. This proved to be pre-malignant. On January 6, 1998, the two areas were surgically removed. Mario Hermsen, a researcher from the laboratory of Hans Joenje traveled from Amsterdam to obtain the tissue removed from Lynn's tongue and and meprobamate.

Fig. 6. Representative electron micrographs of hearts from animals treated with the vehicle, estrogen receptor antagonist ICI 182, 780 alone, or ICI 182, 780 and 17 -estradiol. In all groups, sarcomere structural features are altered and contracture bands are present. The markedly swollen mitochondria with disrupted cristae and osmophilic inclusion bodies indicate irreversible damage. The inability of 17 -estradiol to prevent contraction band necrosis after pretreatment with ICI 182, 780 is consistent with the observation that the cardioprotective effect of 17 estradiol is mediated via the estrogen receptor. Acute renal colic is a common, often recurrent condition with an annual incidence of 1-2 cases per 1000 and a lifetime risk of 10-20% for men and 3-5% for women.13 Patients usually present with acute pain and pose management challenges for the general practitioner, who may be uncertain whether immediate hospital admission is needed and, if not, how and when patients should be followed up.4 In many patients sent to hospital the pain remits on the way to hospital, or soon after admission, in response to the analgesia given by the general practitioner, making the admission perhaps unnecessary.5 The majority of those calling NHS Direct with acute renal colic are advised to contact their general practitioners "urgently"; a small number are referred to the accident and emergency services; and some are advised how to treat themselves.6 and mesna.
