SAB's responsibility as a good employer goes beyond remuneration to ensure a safe working environment. Many SAB companies use the NOSA occupational health and safety standard. All sites in our South African companies are fully NOSA accredited, along with four in SABI Africa and two in Europe. As pledged last year, we have instituted a standard groupwide assessment of accident rates, using the externally recognised DIFR measure disabling injury frequency rate ; . Monitored site by site, this will focus attention on poor performers and so drive down accident rates to the lowest practical level. This year's groupwide average is 1.7, higher than we would like; nonetheless, more than half of SAB companies have rates below 1.5 a benchmark figure as the threshold for achieving NOSA's 5 Star standard.

ABSTRACT We investigated the effect of testosterone suppression on lipoprotein metabolism in men. After a baseline period of 14 days, 12 healthy young men received over a period of 3 weeks daily sc injections of Cetrorelix, an antagonist of GnRH. The volunteers were then followed-up for 10 additional weeks. Administration of Cetrorelix suppressed testosterone significantly up to day 35, after which values returned to baseline. Suppression of testosterone was associated with significant and consistent increases in mean serum levels of high density lipoprotein HDL ; cholesterol by 20% P 0.0001 ; , apolipoprotein A-I apoA-I ; by 10% P 0.0032 ; , apoA-II by 7% P 0.0112 ; , HDL subclass lipoprotein A-I LpA-I ; by 23% P 0.002 ; , and plasma lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase by 7% P 0.001 ; . Serum levels of HDL subclass LpA-I LpA-II changed insignificantly. Moreover, suppression of testosterone significantly increased the median of lipoprotein a ; [Lp a ; ] levels from 5.5 to 8.5 mg dL P 0.0001 ; . The increase in Lp a ; levels was positively correlated with baseline levels of Lp a ; 0.91; P 0.001 ; and amounted to 40 60% in individuals with baseline levels of Lp a ; higher than 3 mg dL. It is not yet known, however, if the activity of the L-arginine transporters in the inner medulla is modulated by physiological stimuli. The current study was therefore designed to determine if dietary NaCl intake affects L-arginine transport in a freshly-isolated suspension of IMCD and on the level of CAT1 immunoreactive protein in the renal inner medulla of Sprague Dawley rats. Further experiments were then performed to determine the influence of blockade of L-arginine uptake in the renal medulla on arterial blood pressure regulation of conscious rats under conditions of low and high NaCl intake and rezulin.
Neuronal Transplant The consensus of results from studies of neuronal transplantation in the PNS and CNS indicate that transplanting tissue from young animals into old animals results in substantially greater neuronal survival and growth than the converse old tissue into young animals ; , or old tissue into old animals. Treatment with neurotrophins can improve survival of sensory neurons from old animals in transplantation studies, as well as in-vitro Hall et al., 2001 ; , however the results usually fall short of those achieved using young or fetal tissue. There are significant changes in the level of neurotrophin receptor expression on sensory and sympathetic neurons with age, with many, but not all studies indicating a decrease in the high-affinity TrkA NGF receptor. It is unclear what the relative importance of p75 receptor stimulation is in aged models, as both increased and decreased neuronal expression of the p75 receptor has been documented. At present it is not clear whether similar benefits of neurotrophin delivery can occur in the gastrointestinal tract, as studies of gastrointestinal neuronal injury, such as re-innervation following selective vagotomy, have been performed primarily in young animals Phillips et al., 2000.

MMPs together can catalyze the complete destruction of interstitial collagen, 17 which is the main component of fibrous caps responsible for their tensile strength. Loss of collagen leads to structural weakness and less resistance to the mechanical stresses imposed during systole.18 This results ultimately in plaque rupture, the key event in triggering coronary thrombosis and hence acute coronary syndromes such as unstable angina and myocardial infarction.19 Expression of MMPs-1, -3, and -9 is upregulated in cells present in atheromas, including endothelial cells, 20 VSMCs, 2125 and macrophages.26 29 Inflammatory mediators, including interleukin-1 IL-1 ; , CD-40 ligand, and tumor necrosis factor- , upregulate MMP activity in vascular cells and rhogam.

Tests were also performed in the case of transfusion reactions. Antibodies against red cell antigens were detected by standard indirect tests using rabbit anti-human immunoglobulin antisera. Antibodies against HLA were analyzed by a standard cytotoxicity test on HLAtyped donors.
